DownEast Home & Clothing today announced the launch of a new marketing initiative, Make the CHOICE to End Poverty, benefitting CHOICE Humanitarian, a strategic nonprofit working in rural villages in developing countries. Disabled Veterans National Foundation Reminds Small Businesses They Qualify for Tax Benefits When They Hire a Veteran

The Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF), a non-profit organization that exists to help men and women who come home with emotional and physical wounds after serving our country, is reminding small business owners that they qualify for tax benefits when they hire a veteran.

The DVNF has been working with veterans to improve their job hunting, interviewing and job acquisition skills through a series of online webinars led by national career placement experts, by working with veterans one-on-one, and offering counsel to employers to help them be successful with veteran hires. The DVNF also wants to remind employers that under the Work Opportunity Tax Credit of 2010, small businesses can receive tax credits when they hire veterans. Business owners can receive a $4,800 credit for hiring a disabled veteran, a $2,400 credit for hiring a non-disabled veteran, and a $9,000 tax credit if they hire a veteran who participated long-term in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

"There are many great reasons for companies to hire veterans, not the least is that our American soldiers have already demonstrated allegiance and integrity to the principles and work ethics of this country," said Raegan Rivers, Chief Executive Officer of the DVNF. "But there are also smart financial reasons for businesses to hire veterans, such as the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. It is our goal to make sure employers are aware of the credit and that they receive any assistance they might need to hire a veteran and claim the credit."

Ray Mears’ bushcraft school to celebrate 30th birthday

In 1983, Mears took a leap of faith and founded his own company. After years of teaching himself the ancient skills devised by our ancestors, his aim was to bring these techniques back to life, passing them on to other kindred outdoorsmen and women. The company he created was Woodlore, The School of Wilderness Bushcraft, located in Etchingham, East Sussex.

In 2013, Woodlore will celebrate its 30th anniversary. That Woodlore is soon to be in its 30th year is testament to the ambition, devotion and knowledge that Mears invested in his company, as he laid the foundations for what would arguably become the most respected and widely recognised school of Bushcraft today.

To celebrate this momentous occasion in the company's history, Woodlore has unveiled some exclusive UK Bushcraft courses and overseas expeditions, along with a range of limited-edition clothing and equipment. The entire collection can be found on its 30th Anniversary page

This new range of bushcraft courses includes a one-day woodcarving master class led by Mears himself, along with the chance to build a birch bark canoe with the help of Mears and expert canoe builder Pinock Smith, on a specially designed bushcraft course.

On the clothing and equipment front, the new collection includes a highly-limited commemorative bushcraft knife, designed by Mears, as well as a unique winter glove made in collaboration with legendary Swedish glovemakers Hestra.
